by Chris Morrison I recently had the opportunity to see a bad ass show at The Observatory North Park last month. Even though I am a San Diego County native, and have lived here all my life, this was my first time going to The Observatory! I had no idea what to expect and I was blown away by both the venue and the performance by Run the Jewels. They are a very talented and energetic rap super-group made up of Killer Mike and producer El-P. photo courtesy of San Diego Reader The Observatory North Park was a 1939 theater now restored into an epic music venue. The theater has been used for everything from screening movies to massive theatrical productions. More recently, The Observatory has hosted hundreds of musical acts, across all genres, with live bands performing every weekend-and more often during the summer. The venue has several bars within it, an attached restaurant, and has even expanded to a second location in Orange County. pictured above: Run the Jewels It doesn't matter if you are sitting or standing the view is fantastic. I got there about an hour early for the show and was able to get a spot in the pit, right against the railing of the stage. That being said, there really isn't a bad seat in the place. The floor is sloped into tiers, with seats and balconies towards the back and a pit in front of the stage. The great acoustics, excellent stage views, and delicious food and drinks make this one of the best music spots in San Diego County. photo courtesy of The Observatory Wear earplugs. I’ll say it again for those of you who are already deaf… WEAR EARPLUGS! I always wear earplugs to a concert but it is especially important with this venue. Due to the intimate size of The Observatory the performance is very loud. Even if you are not up front like I was, the music is head split-tingly loud without earplugs. I plan to keep going to concerts for the rest of my life, and I want to be able to enjoy them. Wear earplugs, you will still be able to hear the concert. I promise. I’m a huge fan of Run the Jewels. I love their music and message and it was awesome to be able to see them live, especially at a great venue like The Observatory. They stepped onto stage and did almost an hour and a half of music with no breaks. The energy in the room was amazing. Check them out if you get a chance. Thankfully, parking at the Observatory North Park is simple and very cheap. There is a large parking structure located right across the street from the venue and The Observatory will validate your parking after the show. I got there early and was able to get a parking spot with no issues. If the show is a more popular band I would recommend getting there about an hour before the show starts to ensure that you get parking and a good seat for the show. If you are going to have dinner or drinks after your show you should be prepared to pay the normal rate for parking, as they only validate immediately after the show. That about wraps it up! Thanks for reading and be sure to check out The Observatory in North Park for a fun night out and local show. It is soooo important to support our local musicians and artists in SoCal.
